Abstract:
Adsorption of O on Pt(110) was studied by XPS, LEED, and thermal desorption spectroscopy in an attempt to explain the role of adsorbed O on the origin of self-oscillations in the oxidation kinetics of CO. On pure Pt(110) (1 × 2), O adsorbs with formation of a single surface state (non-reconstructed adsorption). Intrusion of O into the 1st Pt layer with formation of a new state (reconstructive adsorption) is possible after surface roughening by Ar+ in bombardment.
