Abstract:
Infrared spectroscopy in situ has been used to study the mechanism of CO oxidation on chromium(III) oxide. It was shown that surface carbonate structures are intermediate surface compounds in this oxidation reaction. At low temperatures CO oxidation follows an associative mechanism and the carbonates decomposes with participation of oxygen from the gas phase; at elevated temperatures thermal decomposition of the carbonates is the limiting stage.
