Abstract:
A model of the surface processes involved in CO oxidation on platinum is considered. The surface is thought to be heterogeneous, comprising two types of areas. On both areas, the reaction proceeds according to a five-stage mechanism (the Sales-Turner-Maple scheme), in which the rate constants are close to each other but not equal. CO(ads) diffusion takes place between these areas. The model makes it possible to describe a doubling, a second doubling and further doublings of the period of autooscillations with equal amplitudes and a transfer to the chaos observed in the CO oxidation reaction on Pt(110).
