Abstract:
A study was carried out on the catalytic conversion of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) to methyl mercaptan (MM) in the presence of hydrogen sulphide at 280-475°C. An increase in the conversion of DMS to MM occurs with increasing temperature, increasing contact time, and decreasing DMS concentration in the starting mixture. The effect of acid-base characteristics of the catalyst surface on the rate of conversion of DMS to MM was demonstrated for a series of catalysts. Catalysts with predominantly basic sites have low activity, while protic acid sites have moderate activity. The greatest rate of conversion of DMS to MM is observed on catalysts with a large amount of strong aprotic acid sites.
