Abstract:
A study has been made of the interaction of methanol with excess H2S at 360°C on acidic-type catalysts. It has been established that the most active in forming methyl mercaptan (MM) are γ-Al2O3, η-Al2O3, and oxides of V, Mo, W, and Cr - either massive or supported on Al2O3. The use of SiO2 or AlSi (aluminosilicate) as a support results in lower catalyst activities. The overall activity of the catalysts is increased with increasing surface concentration and strength of the aprotic centers. The selectivity with respect to MM formation at conversions above 60% is no greater than 50%, owing to further reaction of MM with methanol to form dimethyl sulfide. The reaction presumably proceeds through a stage of interaction of activated H2S with CH3O surface groupings that are formed by dissociation chemisorption of methanol.
