Abstract:
The oxidation kinetics of H2S to S in aq. PW12-nVnO40(n+3)- (n = 1-4) solutions were studied as a function of the no. and distribution of V atoms in the heteropoly anion. The oxidation proceeds via outer-sphere complexing of H2S to the heteropoly anion followed by deprotonation to HS-. The rate constants increase 6-fold as n increases from 1 to 4. Maximum catalytic activity is exhibited by α-1,2,3-PW9V3O406- in which the V atoms are located in 3 linked VO6 octahedra.
