Abstract:
The kinetics of reduction of sulfur dioxide by carbon monoxide in quartz reactors of different diameters have been studied at 1100-1350 K using UV and IR spectroscopy. The problem of sulfur dioxide reduction in industrial gas discharges is tremendously important ecologically. Besides traditional catalytic methods, high-temperature homogeneous methods [1] are gaining in significance, especially for treatment of concentrated gases. However, the practical selection of optimum reducing agents and reduction conditions for the process is hindered by lack of information on the kinetics of interaction of sulfur dioxide with basically potentially suitable reducing agents which began with an investigation of the sulfur dioxide-hydrogen system [2]. In addition to hydrogen, carbon monoxide is a fundamental component of conversion gas (synthesis gas), which has been proposed as one of the most promising industrial reducing agents for sulfur dioxide [3].
