Abstract:
Using the gradient-free method in the presence of an alumina catalyst, we have studied the kinetics of disproportionation of methanethiol to dimethylsulphide and H2S and the reaction of methanethiol with methanol at 320-420°C with initial concentrations of the reactants of 0.5-12 mmole/l and a conversion of 10-65%. The kinetic orders of the reactions have been established from single-parameter relationships. The mechanism of formation of dimethylsulphide and dimethyl ether has been proposed, according to which the reaction proceeds via stages of dissociative chemisorption of the reactants, leading to surface methoxylation and subsequent reaction of the CH3O groups with the methanethiol associatively adsorbed on the basic centres. Kinetic equations have been obtained which describe satisfactorily the process on the heterogeneous surface of the catalyst, and parameters of the model have been found. The equations are consistent with the postulated mechanism of the reaction.
