Abstract:
Catalyst coking is generally considered a harmful process that causes catalyst deactivation and, in some cases, catalyst destruction. However, catalyst coking (carbonization) is reported in many studies as intentionally performed to obtain new systems with useful properties. Thus, alumina was covered by a carbon layer to prepare more inert carriers for desulfurization catalysts. Carbon deposition onto oxide catalysts results in complete or mosaic coverage of their surfaces. The deposition on metal catalysts such as Fe, Ni, Co, and others generates various filamentous carbon species in the bulk of the catalyst followed by either the retention of the initial morphology or the complete dispersion and formation of a tangle of carbon filaments. The latter can be referred to as “catalytic filamentous carbon” (CFC). CFC is used for the production of carbon composites—filters. A number of high-percentage metal catalysts based on Ni and its alloys were developed at the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis; they allow the conversion of a wide range of hydrocarbons, including industrial waste, yielding no less than 150–300 g of carbon per gram of catalyst at 770–870 K.
