Abstract:
The Langevin equation and the radiationless transition theory are used to describe hydrogen diffusion. The effect of the conduction electrons on diffusion of hydrogen atoms is discussed. Two problems are considered: the possibility of jumps at once over two or more activation barriers at high temperatures and the relative role of zero- and two-phonon processes in tunnel diffusion. A criterion is derived for estimation of the relative role of jumps at once over two or more barriers. It is shown that these jumps are significant only at very high temperatures (T ≳ 1000 K). It is shown also that the contribution of zero-phonon processes to the rate of tunnel diffusion may be important at T ≲ 0.3 h̵ωS, where ωS is the Debye frequency.
