Abstract:
The influence of experimental conditions on the phase composition and preparation of Mg3(PO4)2 was studied by x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Mg phosphates were prepared by reaction of precipitated Mg(OH)2 with H3PO3. At pH = 4.5-6.0, Mg(HPO4).3H2O ppts. and on heating gives Mg2P2O7. The amount of ppt. increases as the pH increases, and at pH = 8-9. Mg3(PO4)2.22H2O ppts. and on heating dehydrates to Mg3(PO4)2. The surface area increases by a factor of 2 for a pH change from 4.5 to 9.0.
