Abstract:
The effect was studied of the size of metal particles and the nature of the substrate on the valence vibration frequency of CO adsorbed on the surface of supported Pt. An increase of the particle size of the Pt leads to a increase in ν(CO). On the basis of a comparison of results obtained in the case of different substrates (SiO2 and Al2O3), the effect of the substrate nature on the electronic properties of surface atoms of deposited Pt is discussed. The obsd. results are interpreted in terms of the σ- nd π-interaction of a CO mol. with a surface metal atom. Possible use of IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO for control or measurement of dispersity is discussed. This is illustrated exptl. with respect to control for a change of the dispersity of Pt/Al2O3 for treatment at 200-700° in O2.
