Abstract:
A correlation was established between the reactivity of hydrocarbons with respect to the deep oxidation over oxide catalysts and the standard Gibbs free energy for an oxidation reaction, related to a unit of representative product. The reactivity was characterized by a quantity proportional to the fraction of hydrocarbon molecules converted in unit time or unit surface, out of the number of molecules striking the surface of the catalyst. As a unit of representative product, there was taken a total amount of forming CO2 and H2O for which the standard free energy of formation is equal to the standard free energy of formation of 2 g-moles of water in the gaseous state. It was shown by statistical analysis that,n comparison of the reactivity of the hydrocarbons and the free energy of the reaction, referred to a unit of representative product, there are obtained clear correlations, with less scatter of the experimental points than using free energies referred to 1 gmole of oxidized substance or of oxygen.
