Abstract:
A mechanism for the low- temperature catalytic conversion of ortho- hydrogen into para- hydrogen is discussed which does not require uncoupling of nuclear spins and which occurs only under the influence of relatively rapidly fluctuating nonuniform magnetic fields. This mechanism has much in common with nuclear magnetic relaxation. The conclusion reached earlier that antiferromagnets, ferrimagnets, and ferromagnets should be more active catalysts for the low- temperature conversion of ortho- hydrogen into para- hydrogen than magnetically dilute systems also holds for this conversion mechanism under the influence of rapidly varying magnetic fields. This conversion is one of the simplest catalytic reactions, and it may be hoped that further research, which may establish a relation between the magnetic and catalytic properties of the catalyst, will soon permit prediction of catalytic activity.
