Abstract:
A model is proposed for the chemisorption of oxygen on transition metals which is based on the concept of M-O bond formation on the metal surface. The M-O bond energies, equilibrium distances, and charge distributions are calculated. The heats of dissociative chemisorption are determined theoretically and compared with experimental data. It is shown that the increase in the heats of chemisorption of oxygen on passage from NiO to TiO is caused mainly by an increase in the covalent contributions.
