Abstract:
Ultrafine diamond powders were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Purification from nondiamond carbon with the use of boric anhydride as a diamond oxidation inhibitor is found to result in the formation of cubic BN islands on the diamond surface. Boron nitride is formed primarily at the most active surface sites, significantly reducing their reactivity.
