Abstract: The formation of various oxygen states at the surface of silver catalysts for ethylene epoxidation was studied by the kinetic isotope method with the isotope oxygen-18. Relaxation of both chemical and isotope compositions of the reaction products was monitored. The difference between isotope compositions of ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide in time was found. Increases in the amount of exchangeable oxygen and in the relaxation time of the isotope composition of the reaction products with increasing dispersion and surface defectivity of silver particles was revealed. It was confirmed that two states of atomic adsorbed oxygen take part in epoxidation and deep oxidation of ethylene. The conclusion was drawn that electrophilic oxygen, which is responsible for ethylene epoxidation, is formed from the nucleophilic form (surface oxygen of silver oxide) via subsurface oxygen.
