Abstract: Basic characteristics of benzene hydrogenation in the presence of thiophene and of thiophene hydrogenolysis in the presence of benzene were studied. A strong inhibiting effect of benzene on thiophene hydrogenolysis was found. The data obtained for sulfide catalysts prepared by different procedures and supported on different materials suggest that both reactions proceed on the same active sites via competitive sorption of reacting molecules. Active sites responsible for benzene hydrogenation are formed from active sites for thiophene hydrogenolysis as a result of hydrogen sulfide removal.
