Abstract:
A comparative study of the structural features of magnesium oxides derived from various precursors was carried out. The compositions and structures of the starting compounds were found to substantially influence the character and degree of modification of MgO microcrystals. Magnesium oxide, which was prepared by thermal decomposition starting from MgCO3 as a precursor, has standard unit-cell parameters. Thermal decomposition of Mg(OH)(2) center dot MgCO3 center dot 2H(2)O yielded a highly dispersed two-phase system with different degrees of modification of the oxide. Hydration of magnesium oxide in an MgAc2 solution afforded imperfect MgO as an individual compound (a substitution solution), which has high thermal stability and activity in catalytic reactions.
