Abstract:
The mechanism of formation of defect magnesium oxide during MgO hydration in solutions of Mg(NO3)(2) and LiNO3 is studied. An extraordinary compound whose bulk composition can be presented as [Mg(0.925)square(0.045)(N)(0.03)]O-1, is produced by solid-phase transformations in the products of MgO hydration in the Mg(NO3)(2) solution. The defect magnesium oxide prepared in this manner is inhomogeneous both in structure and charge; it possesses high stability and is active in chain-radical reactions of hydrocarbon pyrolysis, In the LiNO3 solution, the starting magnesium oxide hydrates only partly. The resulting defect Mg(OH)(2), which is modified by Li+ and NO3- ions, also transforms to defect magnesium oxide upon calcining. The defect MgO prepared in this manner is less stable and transforms into ordinary magnesium oxide when exposed to the reaction medium.
