Abstract: The redox potentials (E) and the pH values for 0.01-0.2 M solutions of molybdovanadophosphoric heteropoly acids H3 ± nPVVmMo12 - nO40 (HPA-n, 1 ≤ n ≤ 4) and of their reduced forms H3 + m + nPVIVmVVn - m Mo12 - nO40 (HmHPA-n, O ≤ m ≤ n) were measured. The E values are determined by the redox potential of the VO+2 /VO2+ pair, which exists in an equilibrium with the heteropoly anions. The equilibrium fraction of the VO2+ cation (βIV = [VO2+]eq/[VIVΣ] detached from the heteropoly anion HmHPA-n is greater than the fraction of the detached VO+2 cation (βv = [VO+2 ]eq/[VVΣ]). The βIV/βV ratio decreases as n increases and passes through a maximum with an increase in m. The resulting dependences were interpreted in terms of the concept that the HPA-n and HmHPA-n anions participate in one-electron transfer.
