Equilibrium between water vapor and lithium bromide dispersed in KSKG silica gel mesopores was studied thermogravimetrically in the temperature range 40-135°C at water vapor pressures pH2O = 7.5-81.0 mbar. At low relative water pressures, sorption was monovariant and resulted in the formation of dispersed crystalline LiBr · H2O monohydrate, the sorption ability of which was higher than that of bulk material. Further sorption of water was accompanied by the formation in pores of an aqueous solution of the salt having the properties close to those of bulk solution. The isosteric heat of water desorption measured for the disperse system was 77.0 ± 1.5 kJ/mol at N = 1 and 44.5 ± 2.0 kJ/mol at N > 1 (N is the ratio of the number of moles of H2O to the number of moles of LiBr). The apparent activation energy of water desorption (27.4 ± 1.5 kJ/mol) was much lower than the heat of desorption, which implied that the rate-determining step of desorption was diffusion of water molecules in pores of silica gel and/or dispersed solution. The principal characteristics of sorption of water in LiBr-mesoporous silica gel and CaCl2-mesoporous silica gel systems were close to each other, that is, water sorption in impregnated salt-mesoporous matrix-host composite systems was largely determined by the disperse character of the system rather than the chemical nature of the salt. The obtained data shed light on phenomena accompanying transfer of a substance to the dispersed state and may be helpful in analyzing possible material applications in heat adsorption pumps, systems for air conditioning and drying, etc.
