Abstract: Kinetics for the complete catalytic reduction of sulphur dioxide by methane in the presence of an activated Al2O3 catalyst have been studied. Experiments were carried out in the flow laboratory reactor with the use of gas mixtures that model the composition of “strong” metallurgical gases containing 8–9 vol.-% oxygen and 12–15 vol.-% sulphur dioxide. Experimental data made it possible to ascertain the most probable chemical reactions which proceed in the above system within the temperature range 650–850 °C. The thermodynamic analysis results are given. A kinetic model is formulated. By solving the model identification problem the values for rate constants and activation energies are found.
