Abstract: The role of iron in the catalytic properties of ZSM-5 ferrisilicate analogs in the oxidation of benzene to phenol by dinitrogen monoxide has been studied within a wide range of iron concentrations (from 0.003 to 4.8 wt.-% Fe2O3). The samples of the Fe-Si system with optimal iron content, as well as previously studied Fe-Al-Si samples of the same zeolite structure, were found to be far superior to known catalysts. A reaction mechanism is suggested, where the active form of the surface oxygen produced by dinitrogen monoxide decomposition is of key importance. Zeolite acidity was tested and its role in the catalytic activity is discussed.
