Abstract: Catalysts prepared by thermal decomposition of Co2(CO)8 (I) on SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2 supports were characterized by a static magnetic method, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), IR-spectroscopy, chemisorption and temperature-programmed reduction. Fast pyrolysis of the supported I produced finely dispersed superparamagnetic particles of metallic Co characterized by a narrow FMR signal. Their size depended on the Co content and the support used. Catalysts prepared by decomposing I were 2-10 times more active in CO hydrogenation than supported catalysts prepared by conventional impregnation from Co(NO3)2, although the Schulz-Flory distribution of C4+ products was observed in both cases. Increasing Co dispersion decreased both the specific catalytic activity and the probability of chain propagation. Co/Al2O3 systems were slightly less active than those based on SiO2 and TiO2. The average mol. wt. of hydrocarbons produced was the highest on TiO2.
