Abstract:
The aim of this work was to study the stages of the Claus reaction in an aqueous medium and to find ways of raising the reaction rate in order to establish the possibility of its industrial operation. The optimal region for the Claus reaction (pH equals 4. 5-6. 0) in aqueous solution was determined from thermodynamic and kinetic data. Reduction of thiosulfate by hydrogen sulfide was shown to be the controlling step of the Claus reaction in aqueous solutions. Catalysts of the acid-base type, based on soluble silicon and aluminum compounds, which accelerate reduction of thiosulfate by hydrogen sulfide, have been developed.
