Abstract: Catalysts prepared by thermal decomposition of Co2(CO)8 on modified silica were studied by magnetic susceptibility and by IR and ESR spectroscopy, and were tested in CO hydrogenation. The modification of SiO2 by Ti ions made it possible to diminish the size of metallic Co particles. The effect was the most pronounced for modification by hydride complexes of a low-valent titanium. An increase of Co dispersion was accompanied by a drop in the metal activity in CO hydrogenation and by a rise of the relative yield of light hydrocarbons and alcohols, especially that of ethanol.
