Abstract: The coordination of CHCI3 to Cu(Salim)a and Cu(Salim)2Py at 25oC has been studied using NMR. It was found that, in the complexes with Cu(Salim)2, the CHCI3 molecules are arranged out of the plane of the chelate while, with Cu(Salim)2Py, chloroform also forms equatorial outer-sphere complexes. The results are explained by the fact that the planar structure of the chelate is distorted during the axial coordination of pyridine as a result of which the formation of hydrogen bonds between the oxygen atoms of the complex and the hydrogen atoms of the CHCI3 molecules becomes possible.
