Abstract: The effect of pretreatment on the activity of Re2(CO)​10/Al2O3 in the title reaction was examined: when the catalyst was calcined in a vacuum or in H2, treatment of it with O2 at room temperature increased its activity. Two types of active site were proposed, one characterized by an activation energy of ∼17 kJ​/mol, the other by a Re carbene species.
