Abstract: The relation was studied between the catalytic activities of metals for the oxidation of CO and the heats of O2 adsorption -ΔHO and the heats of oxide formation -ΔH0x. As -ΔHO increases so does -ΔH0x. Metals with -ΔHO >220 kJ/mol undergo surface reconstruction with oxide formation. However, on Pt and Ag there is nonreconstructive adsorption of O2 at room temp. Ru, Ni, and Co appear to have a form of nonreconstructed adsorbed O2 as the catalytic center. The transformation of this active form of adsorbed O2 into surface oxides is responsible for the variable activity of these metals in the catalytic oxidation of CO.
