Abstract: The kinetics of the catalytic oxidation of CO by Cr2O7 2- and Ce(IV) ions in the presence of an aquacomplex of Pd(II), as well as the kinetics of the stoichiometric reduction of Pd(II)aq by carbon monoxide, were studied. A comparison of the kinetic functions of these reactions shows that the limiting step of the catalytic oxidation of CO is the reduction of aqua- or chloride complexes of Pd(II) by carbon monoxide. It is suggested that the low rate of the catalytic reaction in the presence of strong oxidizing agents left bracket Cr2O7 2- and Ce(IV) right bracket is explained by the rapid oxidation of Pd(0), which prevents the formation of more active carbonyl complexes of partially reduced palladium.
