Abstract:
Carbon is deposited on nickel catalysts in the case of the dilution of 1,3-butadiene with an inert diluent as films which block the surface and inhibit the catalytic reaction. The replacement of the inert diluent by hydrogen initially decreases the rate of formation of carbon deposits on nickel since hydrogen hydrogenates the carbon formed on the nickel surface available to the reaction medium. An increase in the rate of carbon deposits increases as the reaction proceeds as a result of the formation of nucleation sites of the carbon phase in the internal intercrystalline cavities of the nickel aggregates, dispersion of nickel, and the formation of carbon fibers.
