Abstract: It is shown that spinel formation upon calcination of Al(III)-Zn(II) binary systems obtained by coprecipitation or by mixing the hydroxides in the form of slurries can proceed by two paths: 1) through a low-temperature reaction due to dehydration of products from the interaction of the hydroxides, bypassing the stage of formation of individual crystalline oxides; 2) through a solid-phase reaction between zinc oxide formed by decomposition of Zn(II) hydroxoaluminates with a brucite type structure and the products from dehydration of phases of the system with the structure of Al(III) hydroxides.
