Abstract: The results of study of the oxidation of CO in the presence of palladium complexes in solution as well as on the surface of solid carriers are discussed. The effect of the nature of the oxidants and the effect of oxygen on the reaction mechanism are elucidated. The mechanisms of the homogeneous oxidation of CO by dioxygen in the presence of palladium complexes and of supported palladium catalysts are compared and factors leading to increased catalyst activity revealed. Comparison shows that for the low-temperature oxidation of CO in the presence of H2O vapor, the most promising catalysts are supported catalysts based on Pd(II) complexes and an oxidant to ensure the presence during the reaction of the more active complexes of partially reduced palladium.
