Abstract:
The reaction of carbon monoxide oxidation on recrystallized platinum foil has been studied over a broad range of reactant pressures and temperatures, under stationary conditions. The influence of various states of the oxygen on the reaction kinetics has been demonstrated. Oxygen in the form of near-surface oxides of platinum is nonreactive and does not influence the rate of the CO oxidation reaction. With excess oxygen in the reaction mixture, a change in state takes place, O//c//h//e//m(I) yields O//c//h//e//m(II), with the formation of surface oxides of platinum (lD)O, which leads to a change in the properties of the surface and the appearance of hysteresis phenomena in the reaction of carbon monoxide oxidation.
