Abstract: Infrared and Raman spectroscopic methods were used to study the mechanism of the formation of a Bi-Mo catalyst. X-ray-amorphous Bi2MoO6 is formed upon precipitation from solutions of bismuth nitrate and ammonium heptamolybdate at pH 2, which, after removal of the NH4NO3 side product by filtration and heating, crystallizes to the γ-phase. The presence of NH4NO3 causes a change in the nature of the solid-phase transformations upon heat treatment leading to decomposition of Bi2MoO6 into the alpha-molybdate and a basic bismuth salt which react upon a further increase in temperature to form the γ-phase.
