Abstract: The modification of the adsorbed layer of oxygen on the surface of silver by carbon dioxide leads to a strong suppression of the processes of profound oxidation of ethylene and has little effect on the rate of oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide. The results of the investigation show that the adsorbablity of carbon dioxide passes through a maximum in the region theta equals 0. 15-0. 2 with changing coverage of the silver surface by oxygen. A similar result was also obtained in investigations on single crystals of silver. Close to the indicated region there are maximum values of the rates of profound and partial oxidation of ethylene, and the modifying action of CO2 is manifested to the greatest degree.
