Abstract: A mathematical model is developed for catalyst effectiveness in a reaction, with artificially created unsteady state, on the basis of an optimum control theory. The model is used in the analysis of catalytic, parallel, irreversible reactions. The selectivity of the reaction can be improved by cyclic variation of the gas-phase composition, if times of formation of desired product and byproduct differ significantly.
