Abstract: A study has been made on the effect of a high-temperature carrier (κ-Al2O3, α-Al2O3, MO2-Al2O3, where M = Si, Zr) on the formation of cobalt-containing catalysts. It has been established that interaction between the active component and the carrier medium only occurs in the Co/κ-Al2O3 system with the formation of cobalt aluminate. Accordingly, the degree of reduction of this sample by hydrogen is least for a small cobalt content (congruent-to 5 mass %). At a high cobalt content (congruent-to 17-23 mass %) the degree of reduction is independent of the nature of the carrier and is congruent-to 0.6. The average dimensions of the cobalt particles decrease in the order: α-Al2O3 > ZrO2-Al2O3 > κ-Al2O3 > SiO2-Al2O3. The metallic cobalt particles have lattice structures of both face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close packed (hcp) with packing defects.
