Abstract: The interaction of phosphoric acid with γ- and δ-Al2O3 at 20 - 500°C is studied by high-resolution solid-state Al-27 and P-31 NMR. Surface and bulk phosphates including acidic aluminum phosphates are formed; in the presence of aluminas, decomposition of acidic phosphates proceeds at lower temperatures. The catalytic activity of phosphated samples in isobutanol dehydration is nearly the same as that of aluminum phoshate with P/Al less-than-or-equal-to 1 prepared by precipitation, though the former catalysts show no activity in 1-butene isomerization.
