Abstract:
The comparative kinetic data on stereospecific polymerization of propylene are obtained for the following catalytic systems: TiCl4-diisobutyl phthalate-MgCl2-AlEt3-phenyltriethoxysilane-H-2 and TiCl4-ethyl benzoate-MgCl2-AI(iso-Bu)3-ethyl anisate. The number of active centers (C(r)i) and the propagation rate constant (k(r)i) for isospecific polymerization of propylene are determined by stopping the polymerization with radioactive carbon monoxide. It is found that C(r)i decreases and the calculated value of k(r)i rises when propylene polymerization is carried out in the presence of hydrogen. In the absence of hydrogen, a considerable fraction of active centers that contain the titanium-polymer bond and react With (CO)-C-14 is suggested to be in the inactive state due to steric reasons. Therefore, the k(r)i value of 2.5 x 10(3) l mol-1 s-1 found for propylene polymerization in the presence of hydrogen (when the fraction of the active centers is maximum) is recognized as a correct value.
