The 'deep' oxidation of alcohols of different structures over CuO and CuO/ gamma -Al2O3 catalysts has been investigated. On the basis of the established mechanism of CO2 formation the change in reactivity in a series of test substances is explained. An analysis is given of the relationship of the data to the previously established features of complete oxidation of hydrocarbons over oxide catalysts. This work is pertinent to the catalytic combustion of fuels and the safe disposal of industrial waste.
