Abstract: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have been used in investigating the chemical state and composition of the surface layer of specimens of copper-chromium catalysts CuCr2O4/gamma-Al2O3, in the original state and after use in the process of combustion of residual fuel oil. During the course of catalyst functioning the copper and chromium are partially reduced and the surface layer is coked, with a decrease in the concentrations of copper and chromium at a depth of 1-2 monolayers. The surface area of the active component in the original catalyst has been evaluated.
