Abstract: Adsorption, IR spectroscopy, kinetic, and semi-empirical calculation methods were used to study CH4 and C2H6 interactions with Cr2O3, Fe2O3, V2O5, and ZnO surfaces. The origin of the low catalytic activity of V2O5 for the total oxidation of CH4 is the difficulty of the initial CH4 activation step due to energetic and steric requirements during CH4 interaction with surface O ions.
