Abstract: The oxidation kinetics of H2S to S in aq. PW12-​nVnO40(n+3)​-​ (n = 1-​4) solutions were studied as a function of the no. and distribution of V atoms in the heteropoly anion. The oxidation proceeds via outer-​sphere complexing of H2S to the heteropoly anion followed by deprotonation to HS-​. The rate constants increase 6-​fold as n increases from 1 to 4. Maximum catalytic activity is exhibited by α-​1,​2,​3-​PW9V3O406-​ in which the V atoms are located in 3 linked VO6 octahedra.
