Abstract: Calcination of Pt​/Al2O3 catalysts at 773-​1273 K caused specific activity per g of Pt to decrease as temperature increased. Adsorption, x-​ray phase analysis, and electron microscopy, showed that the decrease in activity is due to Pt particle sintering and to changes in phase composition and texture of the support. Treatment at ≤1080 K has almost no effect on catalyst specific activity per unit surface area of Pt, but treatment of >1020-​1080 K increases specific activity per unit surface area sharply (5-​15 fold)​. The increase is not due to loss of Cl-​ which changes the stability of the Pt-​O adsorbed bond as av. Pt crystal size increases. Instead, the effect is due to a change in chemical composition of the calcined catalysts and to an increase in surface Pt​/Ptn+ ratio. An EXAFS study confirmed that calcination decreased the amt. of "oxide" Pt (Pt-​O sepn. 202 ± 0.02 Å) and increased the amt. of metallic Pt (Pt-​Pt sepn. 2.74 ± 0.04 Å)​.
