Abstract: The effect of phosphorus on the phase and surface composition, and catalytic properties of gallium-antimony catalyst samples has been studied by x-ray phase analysis (XPA), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPES), and NMR. It was found that the phosphorus in these samples is nonhomogeneous or nonuniform. The majority of the phosphorus is present in the form of gallium phosphate, but a minor amount is bound to gallium antimonate. As the total amount of phosphorus is increased the concentration of each of these forms is also increased, and the rate constant for dioxidation to acrylonitrile (AN) is reduced, due to surface modification of gallium antimonate by phosphorus, which binds excess gallium (relative to the antimonate) present on the surface of catalysts without phosphorus.
