IR spectroscopy of adsorbed probe molecules of pyridine (Py), CO, and CDCl3 has been used to study the surface centers of products obtained by the interaction of sulfuric acid and gamma-Al2O3. It has been shown that three types of aprotic centers are present on the surface of these products, with Q = 34-37, 39-43.5, and 47.5 - 51.5 kJ/mole. The strength and concentration of these centers depend on the content of sulfate and the temperature of treatment.. Also present on the surface of the specimens are protic centers, the strength of which remains practically unchanged and coincides with the strength of the centers of the crystalline salt Al2(SO4)3 (PA = 1180-1200 kJ/mole). The concentration of protic centers is also determined by the content of sulfate and the temperature of treatment. A comparison of the values obtained for the acidic characteristics of these catalysts and their catalytic activities in the isomerization of 1-butene to 2-butenes has shown that this reaction proceeds mainly with the participation of protic centers.
