Abstract: The influence of the nature of R in organochlorine compounds R-Cl on the rate of hydrogenolysis of the C-Cl bond was investigated under comparable conditions on a Pd/C catalyst. The rate of hydrodechlorination of substituted chlorobenzenes was found to be correlated with the Hammett sigma-constant of the substituent. Electron donor substituents facilitate hydrogenolysis of the C-Cl bond.
