Abstract: A study has been made of the effects of modification on the catalytic and physicochemical properties of a binary vanadium-molybdenum catalyst when the modifying additives differ substantially in electronegativity and in enthalpy of formation of the corresponding oxides. It has been found that the catalytic activity is related quantitatively to the acidity of the surface and to the strength of bonding to the surface by the reaction mixture components, including the reaction product.
